Without a doubt, most of us take our feet for granted! When foot pain takes hold, it can really slow a person down. The ability to walk in a pain-free manner is invaluable. We depend on our feet for socializing and work. They are the foundation of the body’s skeletal system as well of utmost importance in keeping our cardiovascular system healthy.

Unfortunately, many people walk (and hobble) around with foot pain or sore feet unnecessarily. We don’t realize that there is so much that can be done to help ourselves.

The arches in our feet act as “shock absorbers” and our feet support up to 10 times our body weight with each step, depending on the activity. This makes them prone to experiencing pain and discomfort, particularly when faulty biomechanics exist.

Most likely you have fallen or low arches, which cause you to walk more on the inside of the foot.

Less common is that you have excessively high arches, where you tend to walk more on the outside of the foot. This places excessive stress on the heel area, problems with shock absorption and can predispose you to sprain your ankles.

In fact, your right and left may even look and function differently from each other!

The impact of having uncomfortable footwear and improper arch support is great.

Causes of Sore Feet – Proper Diagnosis is the Key:

Inherited or Developmental Causes of Foot Pain:

  • Flat Feet which predispose you to excessive biomechanical stresses and foot pain as you age
  • Pes Planus, where the foot arches are extremely collapsed
  • Bunions are made worse by wearing improper footwear.
  • High foot arches. People with high arches often come down hard in the heel area. There may be inadequate shock absorption, which can predispose you to other conditions such as Shin Splints, Achilles Tendonitis and Forefoot pain
  • Leg Length Inequality
  • Congenital Bone and Joint Conditions such as Tarsal Coalition
  • Differences in the structure and function between the right and left footy arches

Acquired Causes of Foot Pain:

  • Improper footwear for your feet or that do not fit the activity
  • Leg Length Inequality due to fractures, surgeries or significant injuries
  • Sports Injuries
  • Injuries that were not rehabilitated properly
  • Lack of regular, targeted foot and leg stretching
  • Beginning an activity after having been inactive without properly warming-up
  • Progressing too quickly with exercise and sports
  • Varicose veins and swelling
  • Gout or other Inflammatory Conditions

No matter what the cause, sore feet are no laughing matter and should not be ignored.
